NK 199 sweet corn is a classic variety of corn. Uniform, dense, tender kernels in a bright gold color provide a sweet, delicious flavor, perfect for fresh eating or for canning and freezing. NK 199 corn seeds will grow 8-inch ears with a 2-inch diameter. You can expect about 20 rows of kernels per ear and stalks that grow sturdy and to 8 feet tall. For the best results, we recommend planting NK seeds in the spring for a summer harvest. Plant NK 199 seeds 1 inch deep, allowing 6 to 8 inches of space between seeds. Germination takes around five to 14 days and full maturity is around 82 days. Your NK 199 sweet corn is ready to harvest when the end kernels feel developed, which should be about 21–25 days after half-silk. For large sweet corn plots, aim to plant 18,000 to 22,000 seeds per acre. You can buy bulk NK 199 corn seeds here! This type of corn is also great for home gardening. In order to produce the best and sweetest flavor, do not cross-pollinate. To prevent cross-pollination, isolate NK 199 corn from other varieties, otherwise they may produce starchy kernels.
How To Plant Heirloom Sweet Corn
While each variety of sweet corn may differ slightly in time to maturity and growing conditions, the following generally applies to all sweet corn. Planting should occur in late spring, two weeks after the last frost, in deep mounds of 6-12 inches. Plant 3-4 seeds per mound in a location that gets plenty of sunlight. Be sure your seeds are planted in soil mixed with aged manure or rich compost, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0, for the most vibrant growth possible.
How To Harvest and Care for Heirloom Sweet Corn
We offer a wide range of high-quality seeds for planting sure to cultivate success in any garden. After planting, simply water the soil and keep it moist during germination and harvest. When the corn plants reach a height of 12 to 18 inchesl, use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer for optimal growth results. Weeds may appear in the vicinity, but with manual picking or mulching, these can be managed easily. The root crop may take three weeks before its silks turn brown — a sign of readiness for harvesting heirloom corn that takes place in the fall when husks dry and ears become uncured green.
