Sorghum bicolor. 120 days to maturity. In 1937 a plant that appeared in a field of another variety that was infested with milo disease. This plant however appeared outstanding because of its resistance.
Seeding rate is 9 - 20 lbs per acre, with 16 lbs per acre being optimal. In areas of drought seeding rate is 5 - 6 lbs.
Sorghum is a traditional crop in the South and can be used as a summer cover crop. It is a drought tolerant and can used alone or in a cover crop mix. Sorghums are quick growing grasses that can suppress weeds and penetrate compacted soils with extensive root systems.
One of the first double dwarf combine harvested types at 3-4'. Seeds are a reddish-brown. Seed heads are threshed easily. Stalks are slender and seldom tiller. Martin Milo Sorghum has excellent drought tolerance.
